Abraham Lincoln had just abolished slavery and it was really hard for African-Americans to earn a lawful living and as a result Troy Maxson, His wife Rose, his Children Gabriel, Lyons, and Raynell, and his best friend Jim Bono lived in complete poverty(beyond poverty). It was also hard for blacks to play sports.
